Mischief Makers: the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 launching in Shropshire Libraries

Shropshire Libraries are delighted to present the Reading Agency’s 2018 Summer Reading Challenge, Mischief Makers.

Children will explore a map of Beanotown to find the mysterious buried treasure and become ultimate mischief makers! Dennis, Gnasher and friends will help them solve clues and collect stickers, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. Children sign up at their local library and collect stickers and incentives for every two books they read. When they complete their six books, they receive a special Summer Reading Challenge medal and certificate, all completely free of charge. Registration also provides access to a special Mischief Makers website where children and parents can log on at home to continue the fun.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said:-

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to make reading fun. Children and adults can discover or rekindle a love of reading and the range of arts and craft activities offered make libraries a destination this summer.”

To support Mischief Makers, Summer Reading Challenge 2018, Shropshire Libraries have made it possible for adults and teenagers to join in the challenge with The Big Summer of Reading 2018. With a prize draw and incentives for those who have read four books, reading will be all the rage this summer in Shropshire.

Registration opens from Saturday 14 July 2018 and parents can keep an eye out for special Summer Reading Challenge activities and events over the summer too. You can check what is going on at your local library at https://shropshire.gov.uk/libraries/.

There is no other free reading activity that involves so many children, introduces families to their library, encourages children to choose books freely and independently and is endorsed by parents, teachers and the Department for Education. Selected libraries in Shropshire are also offering children the chance to do Arts Award Discover alongside the Summer Reading Challenge, for a small charge. Arts Award is a set of qualifications for children and young people, that gets them involved in and excited about the arts and culture.

There will be Arts Award information sessions in Oswestry, Ludlow and Shrewsbury Library during the first week of the summer holidays with an art activity and sharing session during the last week of the holidays.
