Shropshire Council, along with its partner A4U, is inviting people to come along to its new, weekly Shropshire Autism Hub.

The first session which is open to anyone on the autism spectrum, including Asperger Syndrome, and their carers will take place on Thursday 29 January 2015 from 12pm until 4pm at Louise House in Shrewsbury.

Future sessions will happen every Thursday at the same time and place.

Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult services – transformation and safeguarding, said:

“Facilities such as this enable us to provide a quality service to those individuals on the Autism Spectrum who may otherwise not receive any support, providing them with a greater quality of life and supporting them to increase their confidence and independence.

“This is an excellent facility. It offers people the ideal opportunity to visit and have a chat, get helpful advice and socialise with others.”

The Autism Hub was made possible by capital grant funding, and as well as these weekly events, a number of improvements have been made to the building and the facilities it offers.

New Information Technology Equipment will provide an opportunity for those more experienced in using IT to use the facilities and also support others who are less experienced in this area, with using computers, the internet and making online applications.

The building is also undergoing some improvements to make it more welcoming and homely for the people who use it. This will include new noticeboards, comfortable seating, sensory lighting and a projector to project information onto the walls.

Lee added:

“These improvements will enable the building to be used for many more things such as courses and information sessions and lots of ideas have already been discussed. I am excited about its future.”
