Swimfit programme launched in Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock

Shropshire Council has teamed up with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) to offer the British Gas Swimfit programme twice a week at both Bridgnorth Leisure Centre and Much Wenlock Leisure Centre.

Swimfit is a motivational ‘tool for the pool’ developed by experts at the ASA to get more people swimming, more regularly. It caters for all ages and swimming abilities and is separated into four themes progressing from ‘health’ through to ‘competitive’

Swimfit is to be delivered in Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock following a successful bid to Energize STW, the county Sports Partnership, for Sport England funding – funding that will pay for the annual franchise, staff training, facility hire and tutor costs.

The Swimming Coordinators at the two centres have adapted the current pool timetables to include the Swimfit sessions, which will be delivered at the following times.

Bridgnorth Leisure Centre
Thursdays: 9.00pm – 10.00pm; Saturdays: 5.00pm – 6.00pm
Swimfit Activators: Sue or Lewis
Both sessions cost £3.35 per person

Much Wenlock Leisure Centre
Wednesdays: 7.00pm – 8.00pm; Fridays: 6.00pm – 7.00pm
Swimfit Activators: Amy or Will
Both sessions cost £4.00 per person

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “Many people will have been inspired by the Olympics to get swimming, and many people may have made a new year’s resolution to get fit and active. Either way, Swimfit is a great way for people of all ages to get swimming and get active and it’s great that we can offer this scheme in our Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock leisure centres.

“Whether you want to shape up and tone your body, reach your peak fitness level or compete in swimming competitions, the gym-style programme from Swimfit has everything you need to get motivated, stay on track and achieve your swimming goals.”

Under the Swimfit programme, swimmers can access online goal-based programmes, set themselves distance challenges, and log and track their progress online.

How is British Gas Swimfit Delivered?

Swimmers can pick up a Swimfit Activate session card from a poolside unit and follow the session independently. There are 30 session cards which are all based on the number of lengths a swimmer wishes to complete during their session. Ranging from 10 lengths to 120 lengths, there is a session card for every swimmer. The session cards encourage swimmers to progress to the next session during their next visit.

British Gas Swimfit Activate offers a quick start option that introduces the swimmer to Swimfit. Swimmers are directed to swimfit.com to log their session and track their progress, where they can also access tailored programmes, create their own sessions and take part in Swimfit challenges.

British Gas Swimfit Activate+ structured sessions provide swimmers with the opportunity to follow a session card in a group environment, with the added benefit of support from an Instructor. Swimmers receive an assessment of their goals and a recommended session to follow, along with support, encouragement and stroke development advice.

Delivered by a qualified UKCC/ASA Level 2 swimming teacher, Swimfit Activate+ enables pools to cater for all swimming ability levels within a single session.
