Volunteers needed for IT mentoring project

Related topics: Community

The IT mentors project is being run at a variety of community IT sites around Shropshire. The aim of the project is to support adults who want to improve their IT skills in a friendly, informal atmosphere in their local community by linking them up with an IT mentor for one-to-one training sessions.

We are looking for individuals with a little time to spare who would be willing to act as IT mentors to work with adults who have not used a computer before.  IT mentors do not need to be computer experts or have previous teaching experience; they just need to know more than the person they are supporting.  It is important that volunteers have patience and are willing to go at the learners pace.

The mentor would be working with each learner for one hour a week over a 4-week period. It would be ideal for someone who is retired or looking to get experience and skills for their CV.

The sessions are being held at Llanymynech Village Hall, and Chirbury Post Office and Stores.

Full training is given to IT Mentor volunteers, along with activities and resources to be used during the sessions.  Mentors can volunteer to support as many learners as they feel able to give the time to.  The joys of seeing someone discover the wonders of the Internet for the first time can be a very rewarding experience.
