Four One Four, a company which specialises in building concrete skateparks, has been chosen to build a new mini skate ramp at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

The decision was made following a consultation earlier in 2012 which sought young people’s and skaters’ views about their preferred location for a skate facility, and what they wanted it to look like.

Work to build the skate park, which is expected to cost around £25,000, will start in  spring 2013 and it will take just five weeks to complete.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“We are really pleased with the design and are confident that this is what young people and skaters want, and just as importantly where they want it.  This was achieved by involving them at the very start, and will ensure that they use it.

“Four One Four is an excellent company, which has a lot of experience in building concrete skateparks.  It also is keen to continue to work with young people to help them shape the design further.”

Karen Burgoyne, local Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, said:

“It was really good to see those young people who will be actually using the skate ramp to get directly involved in the project, from participating in discussions on location and design based on the funds available, to proactively obtaining quotes.  I look forward to seeing them enjoying the facility in the very near future.”

The money to build the new skate park will come from the Leisure Facilities Strategy capital programme, funded from Shropshire Council’s corporate resources.

This new facility will replace the previous skatepark at Monkmoor Recreation Centre.
