As part of National Alcohol Awareness Week (19-25 November 2012), Shropshire’s drug and alcohol action team is encouraging people to sign up for the nation’s Dry January month at the beginning of 2013.

The challenge is to stay off alcohol by avoiding that cheeky after-work pint, that glass of wine on the sofa, or that big boozy night out, for the month of January.

The aim of the campaign, organised by national charity Alcohol Concern, is to get as many people signed up, and get family and friends to sponsor them, to raise money for Alcohol Concern.

The money raised will help Alcohol Concern make a real difference to the lives of those harmed through alcohol misuse.

By taking part in the challenge you’ll feel better, save money and help make a difference.  This is your chance to ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline, and save the pennies.

People can get involved with Dry January by finding more information and signing up at www.dryjanuary.org.uk.  You can ask your family and friends to sponsor your big challenge through Virgin Money Giving.  You will also be able to receive tips and share your experience through twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for substance misuse, said:

“I would encourage everyone to support the Dry January campaign; why not challenge yourself, by banishing the drink this January, make a healthy start to the New Year, and help improve the lives of those harmed through alcohol misuse.”

The launch of the Dry January campaign comes at the same time as National Alcohol Awareness Week, a campaign that aims to promote the safe and sensible consumption of alcohol.
