New zebra crossing on London Road in Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council will start work next week (Monday 20 August 2012) to provide a new zebra crossing on London Road, Shrewsbury.

The work, which is expected to take two to three weeks to complete, hase been brought forward because contractors have become available to deliver this project during the school/ college summer holidays.  They will be constructing a new zebra crossing on London Road, between the junction with Ebnal Road and the main entrance to Shrewsbury College, and resurfacing sections of the main road and pavements.

This is the first phase of the London Road Enhancement Scheme, which was approved by councillors in June 2012 at Shropshire Council’s central planning committee.  Future work includes another zebra crossing on Preston Street near the Column roundabout, and other surfacing work.  The Enhancement Scheme is aimed at making improvements for all road users on London Road, although the zebra crossing will be of particular benefit to the hundreds of students who walk and cycle to Shrewsbury College.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said:

“It’s great that this work has been brought forward to take place during the summer holidays when the road is quieter.  The installation of this crossing will benefit many people wishing to cross this busy road.”

Liz Parsons and Jon Tandy, Shropshire Councillors for Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton, said

“We are pleased that residents will begin to see some improvement to this major access road into Shrewsbury.  We have been asking for enhancements for some time and it is pleasing that an early start to resurfacing and the crossing near the college will soon be underway.”

It is inevitable with work of this nature that there may be a certain amount of disruption, but every effort will be made to minimise this.

The work will be undertaken by the council’s contractor, Ringway, and will be supervised on site by staff from its term consultants, Mouchel.
