Two students from William Brookes School have today (Monday 19 March 2012) been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it makes its journey from Greece to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Saffron Allen

16-year-old Saffron from Ironbridge has been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch in recognition of her sporting achievements.

From a very young age, Saffron has been competing at an international level in the male- dominated sport ice hockey, and is now in the Great Britain senior women’s team.

A pupil at William Brookes School in Much Wenlock, Saffon is an Olympic Youth Ambassador.  Her role is to promote Olympic values to primary and secondary school pupils across the country.

Saffron said:

“I’m really excited.  It’s a great honour to be chosen to carry the Torch and be part of the Olympic celebrations in the UK.”

Katie Row

18-year-old Katie from Much Wenlock has been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch in recognition of her role as a platinum young ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust.

Katie has been working with primary and secondary schools students across the country to promote Olympic values for over a year.

Katie said:

“This is an amazing opportunity and I’m so excited to be chosen to be a torchbearer, particularly as Much Wenlock is home to Dr William Penny Brookes, founder of the Wenlock Olympian Games and an inspiration to the revival of the modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.”
