Some of the ways that Shropshire Council monitors air quality and protects people from air pollution will be showcased on Monday 26 September 2011 to mark World Environmental Health Day.

Environmental health workers will be on hand to talk to visitors to Shirehall in Shrewsbury about the work taking place to measure air quality in the county, the ways people can find out more about the ongoing findings and the initiatives taking place in response.

A manned information stand will be set up in the foyer on the first floor, outside the Council Chamber, from 10am to 4pm on Monday 26 September 2011.

The day also marks the release of the Air Quality Progress Report 2009/10 for Shropshire, and visitors can discover more about the results of this work.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said:

“Air pollution is a problem indoors and outdoors, with causes ranging from the traffic on our roads to second-hand smoke from tobacco products.

“Extensive work takes place in Shropshire to monitor air quality and protect people from air pollution, including running air quality management areas, monitoring stations, using measuring equipment in town centres and measuring emissions from vehicles.

“We want to show people how they can find out more about air quality, raise awareness of the risk to health and well-being and what they can do to minimise the effect on their health.”

World Environmental Health Day is being held for the first time this year to place the focus on the work carried out by environmental health workers to protect the environment and public health.  Across the UK, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health is supporting its members to highlight the initiative and their work on air quality.
