The local media got a sneak peek at the new Oswestry Leisure before it opened its doors to the public on Saturday 1 October 2011.

The state-of-the-art centre was getting a few last minute tweaks as Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, carried out a room-by-room tour.

Steve Charmley said:

“This is a fantastic new centre and I’m sure local people will be very impressed, as the media were.

“There’s something to suit everyone.  It boasts two swimming pools (a 25m competitive pool and a learner pool), a sports hall, fitness suite, activities studio and multi-function room with a seating area near to the learner pool.

“Every aspect of the centre has been cleverly designed and carefully considered.  The colours used inside were specifically chosen to make it easier for partially-sighted people to distinguish the different areas, the village change cubicles provide a safer changing experience with direct supervsion from poolside and, to save energy, there is a liquid pool cover to prevent chemical and heat evaporation meaning that heat is trapped in when not in use.”

The open day celebrations will take place from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 1 October 2011, with a ribbon being cut by Councillor Keith Barrow to declare the building officially open at 12.30pm.

A number of free activities will be taking place throughout the day, including taster sessions in cricket, badminton, canoeing and dance.  Also there will be art play, face painting and soft play equipment for children, exhibition space and art performances.

There will also be a market place, where local clubs and groups will have the opportunity to have a display where they can advertise their organisation and recruit new members.

All of these activities are free – all you need to do is remember to bring your swimwear!

The free swim session on the day will take place from 3.15pm until 4pm, and for safety reasons numbers will be restricted.

Local people should watch out for their new Oswestry Leisure Centre leaflet which will be arriving through their doors shortly to take advantage of some great opening offers, including a chance to win a year’s full membership.

Carrying on the celebrations, swimming will be free from 9am until 6pm on Sunday 2 October 2011.  Sessions will take place on an hourly basis to give everybody the opportunity to swim (normal admission policies will apply).
