Food hygiene warning following prosecution

A chip shop owner from the Wrexham area has been sentenced to an eight month custodial sentence and banned from operating a food business, following a prosecution taken by Wrexham County Borough Council and supported by Shropshire Council’s environmental health team.

Ramazan Aslan, who was operating Llay Fish Bar, was sentenced on 4 February at Mold Crown Court having pleaded guilty to the following charges in January:

  1. Failure to safeguard cooked and ready to eat food against contamination with e.coli O157.
  2. Failure by the defendant to notify the Council that he was the Food Business Operator.
  3. Failure to put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure based on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles.
  4. Failure to keep up to date the documents setting out his food management procedure.
  5. Inadequate procedures in place to control pests.
  6. Not receiving adequate training in the application of HACCP principles.

Officers from Shropshire Council formed part of the outbreak control team in this cross-border investigation.

Councillor Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for environmental health, said:

“This sentence shows a clear message to food traders of the implications of not practising good food hygiene.”
