The chair and vice chair of Burnell and Severn Valley Local Joint Committee (LJC) helped to celebrate the first birthday of Condover Youth Club.

Shropshire councillors Claire Wild and Tim Barker joined with members to mark the milestone in January.

The club, which has been supported by the LJC, meets every Tuesday at Condover Village Hall from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, for children aged over eleven, and charges £1 per child. In its first year they have enjoyed a wide range of activities, from craft and cooking to ice skating and travelling to Middletown Youth Club to have fun at their Christmas and Valentines Discos. New members and volunteers are welcome so please pop along anytime.

The recent Burnell and Severn Valley LJC meeting was held at Buildwas Village Hall on 7 February 2011 on the set of the Aladdin pantomime. Around 30 members of the public and the committee from the eleven involved parish councils attended. They took part in an ideas gathering session on rural issues, focusing on several subjects including experience and view of broadband quality and the role of the parish council in community support.

LJC chair, Councillor Tim Barker gave a presentation on the Shropshire Council budget 2011-12 and seven applications to the community chest budget were agreed by the committee.

This included an application from Shrewsbury Dial-a-Ride which provides an accessible transport service currently used by 37 people in the LJC area.

Linda Cox, the manager of the service, explained how the project would improve efficiency of the service throughout the Shrewsbury and surrounding rural area. Linda explained that one passenger travelling from Eaton Constantine on a Tuesday morning would like to help other residents who are elderly or people with disabilities to share this trip.

She had several ideas that will also increase use of the service. The committee voted unanimously to support this project and several members mentioned individuals in their parishes who rely on this service. To contact Shrewsbury Dial-a-Ride please call 01743 450270.

The next meeting of the LJC will be in June, at a date to be confirmed, at Harley Village Hall. Amongst the items on the agenda will be feedback from the rural issues session.

Councillor Barker said: “I hope everybody found the meeting useful and enjoyable. I am looking forward to reading through everybody’s views on these important rural issues and finding the way for the LJC to make progress in these areas.”
