Related topics: Democracy

Ahead of the local elections on 1 May [2025], letters are being sent to properties in the Shropshire Council at which no-one is currently registered to vote.

The letters – being posted out from today (14 March) – remind people how to register, and highlight the importance of being on the electoral register.

Elections are being held on 1 May for Shropshire Council, and for town and parish  councils in the Shropshire Council area (where contested).

The letter says:

Our records show that there is currently no one registered to vote at this address. If this property is used as a holiday or second home, is a commercial premises or if the occupier is temporarily away, you do not need to do anything. If someone does live at the property, please see below for details on how to register.

It also reminds people that if they are not registered to vote they won’t be able to vote in the May elections, but may also be unable to:

  • Get a mobile phone contract
  • Apply for a store card or credit card
  • Buy from a mail order catalogue
  • Apply for a mortgage
  • Open a bank account

Anyone aged 16 or over can register, but they will need to be 18 or over on 1 May 2025 to vote in this year’s elections.

To register people should visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and complete the online application. It only takes a few minutes. The deadline to register is Friday 11 April.
